We’re proud to share that our Wainui Church project, a heritage restoration and adaptive reuse initiative designed in collaboration with Warren and Mahoney Architects and Objects in association, has been awarded Best Small Project Architecture at the 2024 Canterbury Architecture Awards.
The project involved converting a weather-worn church into a contemporary, thoughtfully detailed space that honoured its heritage while meeting modern design standards. Taurus was responsible for the fabrication of the mezzanine floor’s support structure, the distinctive spiral staircase, and custom window shrouds—all integral components in realising the architects’ vision and ensuring the building’s functionality and visual impact.
Each element demanded a high level of precision and craftsmanship. The spiral staircase, a centrepiece of the design, required complex geometric fabrication to meet both aesthetic and structural requirements. The mezzanine support structure was fabricated to exacting specifications, enabling the creation of a new usable space within the church’s original structure.
Completed in collaboration with RnP Homes and a committed team of consultants and craftspeople, the project has been recognised with the Best Small Project Architecture award at the 2024 Canterbury Architecture Awards, highlighting the strength of collaboration, craftsmanship, and the transformative power of adaptive reuse.

Taurus manufactured and installed a new elegant spiral staircase, enhancing the building’s functionality while adding to its visual appeal.
To ensure the stability of the spiral staircase, we also installed a steel framework inside the church, providing robust support for the staircase and a mezzanine floor for an additional bedroom.
To date, all tasks assigned to Taurus have been successfully completed.

On 9 May 2025, the Taurus and group company Vortex Engineering teams came together once again to support Christchurch City Council’s ongoing tree planting initiative. This year, we gathered at a small red zone area in Heathcote Valley, right across from the riding school, to continue our commitment to a greener future.
A huge thank you to all the Taurus team members who volunteered their time— it was great to take part once again alongside Sarah Mankelow from the Christchurch City Council.
Well done, team! Another small but meaningful way we’re living our commitment to Engineering Clean Air.
Taurus recently completed a project for Citycare, this was the removal of an old diesel pipe and pipe replacement – providing a more robust and long-lasting solution for our client.
The project involved several key stages, starting with radar detection to accurately locate the trench pathway between the tank and the building. Once excavated, our team carefully removed the old pipeline from the pump house before installing the new system and conducting comprehensive pressure tests. Our team maintained strict quality control throughout every step, to ensure a reliable, safety tested and durable product and service.
The upgrade enhances the system’s longevity and efficiency for long-term use of the diesel pipes. We appreciate Citycare’s trust in us and look forward to delivering quality engineering services to more clients in the future.
Today, we delivered food and essential items to City Mission. Supporting our community during the festive season has been a Christmas tradition for Taurus, and this year, with the rising cost of living, City Mission’s charitable efforts are more meaningful than ever. We hope this initiative can make a difference for more people.

Joy Godding, one of our dedicated team members in the Taurus Stainless division, has been with us for nearly 9 years. Last month, Joy was selected as a finalist in the 2024 National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Excellence Awards. The NAWIC Excellence Awards recognize and celebrate the outstanding contributions of women in construction across Aotearoa.

On 14 June 2024, the Taurus and Vortex teams joined forces at Belair Close to support the Christchurch City Council’s tree planting initiative. Together, we successfully planted approximately 200 trees, contributing to a greener and more sustainable future for our community.
We are proud to be part of this impactful initiative and look forward to more opportunities to protect and enhance our environment. This event underscores our commitment to environmental stewardship and our dedication to improving community infrastructure.

Taurus Engineering is actively refurbishing pieces of Bailey Bridges, a crucial undertaking for the rapid repair of bridges damaged in floods. New Zealand has two storage facilities for Bailey Bridges, and over time, these bridge pieces require refurbishment.
Shane Smith, General Manager of Taurus, said, “Taurus has been entrusted with this task through Downer. Leveraging our technical expertise and experienced workforce, we are extensively refurbishing these bridge components.”
The NZ Transport Agency skillfully uses Bailey Bridges for emergency bridge repairs, a method that not only enables timely repairs but also embodies sustainability by reducing waste and maintaining the environment. Taurus is honored to collaborate with Downer in contributing to Aotearoa’s resilience and sustainability.

The Hilti PLT300 is a professional laser distance measurement tool for construction and building projects. It measures both horizontal and vertical distances, angles, and areas with accuracy and precision. Although Hilti PLT300 was designed for the main purpose of setting out points on a construction site from digital drawings such as bolt hold down points or drill locations in 2D, our skilled project engineers use the PLT300’s measure and save function to convert existing building site points to 3D models, eliminating the need for time-consuming traditional methods such as string lines, laser levels, and measuring tape.
This proactively identifies potential clashes on site, reducing remedial work. Our clients can expect the highest standards of quality and professionalism from us, and the Hilti PLT300 is a testament to that commitment.
